Energy Saving Tips for Your Spa

Nobody wants to spend more money than they have to – when it comes to the costs of running a spa this is no exception! This winter it’s time for you to implement energy saving strategies that ensure your time in the spa won’t come at an extra cost!

Here are our top energy saving tips:

1. Cover Your Bases

They say we lose a lot of heat out of our heads – the same is true for your spa when it’s left uncovered, that’s why it’s essential to invest in a top-quality spa cover. Even if you have a well-insulated spa, up to 85% of heat can be lost through the cover. Make sure your cover isn’t broken or damaged and pay special attention to the contact points around the edges and any hinge folds, as these are most susceptible to heat leaks. By investing in a quality cover, you reduce the strain on your thermostat, thus save energy heating your spa!

2. Lower that thermo-STAT!

It doesn’t make sense to heat a spa that’s not being used – so while you’re not using it, the best thing you can do to save your wallet is to turn the heating off or at least to its lowest temperature setting! Hand-in-hand with this nifty tip is to invest in an energy efficient solar heating system, so even when you’re in the midst of a relaxing weekend spent in the spa you don’t have to worry about the energy bill!

Note: make sure you are checking your spa regularly for any cracks and leaks that may lose warmth and put extra strain on the thermostat.

3. Keep Your Pump At Peak Performance

Running your pump can be a major cost to incur every spa season, but it’s essential to run your spa pump through the full volume of water at least once or twice a day. To curb your energy costs, consider running your pump during off-peak electricity times (you can find your off-peak times by contacting your energy provider), and run your pump at the lowest speed recommended that will still maintain water quality.

4. Get Around It!

Installing a windbreaker is a great way to both increase privacy for your spa area and minimise heat loss by reducing the spa’s exposure to wind (that will impact the temperature).
Look around your spa area and identify what other elements could be adjusted to save some energy and money! For example, change the lighting in and around your spa to energy efficient LED’s. The globes last longer too, reducing the waste.

Are you being Spa-Smart?

If you’re in the market for a spa, the best energy saving tip is to install an energy efficient spa from the get-go. Don’t waste time lusting after spas that will cost an arm and a leg to run.
