What is hydrotherapy?

Defined as the use of water to enhance health and wellbeing, hydrotherapy has been used for thousands of years to prevent and treat disease, relieve stress and tension, and boost muscle recovery.

From Roman Soldiers bathing in hot wells to help them recover from war, to the Ancient Greeks building hospitals around hot springs, hydrotherapy is well documented as a form of natural physical therapy.
For many pool and spa owners, you will be aware of the amazing impact hydrotherapy can have on the body.

Essentially, hydrotherapy makes use of the body’s reaction to both hot and cold stimuli. When you bath in hot or cold water, your nerves transmit sensations deeper into the body, which stimulates circulation and lessens sensitivity to pain. Heat is used to soothe the body, whereas cold is used to stimulate and invigorate, increasing internal activity.

If you are experiencing tense muscles or anxiety, hopping in the spa for a soak is strongly recommended. If you’re tired and stressed, sit in the spa then jump straight in the pool to stimulate body and mind.

The hydrotherapeutic benefits of relaxing in the spa:

  • Improves heart function
  • Helps lower back pain
  • Purifies your lungs by adding eucalyptus oil to the water
  • Revitalises the skin
  • Gives you a better sleep
  • Relieves stress
  • Relieves muscle pain
  • Relieves arthritis

Hydrotherapy: just another reason to love your pool and spa.
