Swimming in winter

A small splash, closely followed by a loud gasp for air and, of course some form of regret… That’s what most people associate with swimming through winter – but it doesn’t have to be that way. Just because it’s cold and unpleasant outside doesn’t mean your pool has to be. With these simple tips and guidelines we can help you make the most of your favourite investment, and have a comfortable and rejuvenating winter swim.

The most important part – heating

While some people might like to grit their teeth and dive in the cold end, others will prefer to turn the Celsius up.

If you’re looking to install a heating system, we recommend the Hayward Titanium Energyline Pro. It’s a highly efficient and durable heat pump with a hot gas defrost valve that makes it perfect for winter temperatures.

If you don’t have one already, a high quality pool cover is also a wise investment. It helps to keep the water warm and completely prevents waste from getting into your pool, which makes cleaning a breeze.

Getting your pool ready

Of course, the inclusion of a heating system will require slight adjustments to your maintenance regime. Sanitisers are consumed at a slightly higher rate the warmer your water, so you’ll need to keep an eye on your levels. Aim for a pH balance of 7.4 – 7.8, keep your chlorine levels at 1 – 2ppm or 2-3ppm if your temperature is above 26 degrees, and make sure Total Alkalinity stays around 120 – 150ppm.

Keep your pumps and filter running so you can manage any algae problems. And why not download the printer friendly version of our BioGuard_3-Step Winter Pool Maintenance Guide and stick it on the fridge?

Taking the plunge

If you still think you’ve got what it takes to dive into a bit of swimming through winter, here are a few more words of advice to help you deal with the cold.

Because your head is sensitive to changes in temperature, try wearing a bathing cap, and pop in some watertight earplugs. It might also be worth investing in a wetsuit.

Make sure to warm up before you hop in the water and keep a towel close by (and maybe a cup of hot tea too!).

And, although slipping into a cold body of water after a big workout might seem like a punishment, it could be the relief your aching muscles have been looking for.

Studies show this can lead to a reduction in muscle soreness of around 20%, which is quite substantial. Just a few laps of the shallow end, spending no longer than 10 minutes in the pool, could make all the difference.

Preparing for a swim in the middle of winter is a mental challenge, but the rewards are worth it.

This winter, get the blood pumping and brave the unknown.
